Ms. Rykse is from Sparta, Michigan which is a small farming village just north of Grand Rapids. Her upbringing in a small town as the youngest of eight children nurtured her passions to serve others, lead by example, and give back to the community. These passions, in addition to several phenomenal teachers along the way, led her to choose teaching as her profession.
She believes teaching is a genuine honor and great responsibility because it entails the privilege of helping students blossom into empowered young adults.
Ms. Rykse graduated from Grand Grand Valley State University in April 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Education and a minor in Psychology. While at Grand Valley, she was co-captain of her intramural soccer team, was Academic Chair of the Honor’s College Community Council (ANCHOR), and worked as a Lead Research Consultant for the university libraries. She also coached soccer and helped facilitate a youth group for a local church.
During Ms. Rykse’s undergraduate experience, she taught in various local school districts and abroad. In June 2014 she traveled to Maastricht, Netherlands with Grand Valley’s English Education department and taught English at United World Colleges – Maastricht. She then taught English at Alger and Westwood Middle Schools in the fall of 2015. Additionally, she taught AP English Literature, AP Psychology, and English 12 at Sparta High School in 2016. Ms. Rykse is eager to bring these various experiences into her classroom and is excited to empower students to recognize their unique potential!
Ms. Rykse looks forward to sharing a vision of increased empathy, kindness, curiosity, and positivity with her English 12 and AP English literature classes this year.
